How Therapy Works (Step by Step)

  1. Request an appointment: choose online or in person; we confirm details and location.
  2. Intake & match: we review goals and match you with a therapist experienced with your child’s needs.
  3. First sessions: get to know your child, clarify concerns, set goals, and agree on a plan.
  4. Active treatment: weekly or bi-weekly sessions to learn and practice skills.
  5. Parent involvement: coaching and check-ins to support progress at home.
  6. Measure & adjust: track progress, refine strategies, and plan graduation from care.

Tip: Consistency matters—attend regularly and practice new skills between sessions.

Online or In-Person—Your Choice

Teletherapy offers privacy and convenience from home or school (where appropriate). In-person sessions are great when your child prefers face-to-face care or benefits from hands-on activities. Both options focus on safety, comfort, and effective, age-appropriate support.

What to Expect

  • Warm, child-centered conversations and activities
  • Clear goals and a simple plan you can follow at home
  • Parent updates and collaboration with pediatricians/schools (with consent)

Therapy vs. Psychiatry—what’s the difference?

Therapists provide talk therapy and skill-building. Psychiatrists/PMHNPs can prescribe medications. Many children benefit from both.

How long are sessions and how often?

Most sessions are 45–55 minutes, weekly or bi-weekly. Frequency may decrease as your child progresses.

Will parents join sessions?

Yes, especially for younger children. For teens, part of the session may be 1:1 to build independence while keeping parents informed.

Can we switch therapists?

Absolutely. If the fit isn’t right, we’ll help you transition to another clinician.

What if we’re in crisis?

If there’s immediate risk of harm, call your local emergency number or go to the nearest emergency department.

Do you work with schools?

With your consent, yes. We can share recommendations and support 504/IEP processes when appropriate.
